Instant loan apps kill two in old Karimnagar

KARIMNAGAR: Two youths have died by suicide, allegedly unable to bear the harassment of debt collectors from an instant loan app and online gambling site here in the former Karimnagar district.

The victims were identified as Dathu Prashant (25), working as a supervisor at Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) and Tarun Reddy, an intermediate student and resident of Antaragam village of rural Jagtial mandal.

Prashant had been living with his parents Rajanna and Mallishwari in Godavarikhani of Peddapalli district since 2017.

Prashant recently passed the official sub-manager exams as well. In his spare time, he used to play the online cricket betting game for the Singareni team. As he was losing money through betting, he took out a Rs 60,000 loan through an instant loan app ‘Moneyview’ for a high interest rate. But he failed to repay the loan on time.

The debt collectors from the loan application started making calls and when Prashant didn’t return their calls, they started calling his parents and harassing them. While transforming her photos, they also allegedly created lewd images with other women and started sending them to her friends, relatives and family members. Feeling humiliated, Prashant left home on July 7. When Prashant did not return home even after two days, his parents filed a complaint at Godavarikhani town police station on July 9.

However, Prashant ended his life by jumping under a train on the night of July 9 between the boundaries of Ramagundam and Raghavapuram stations.

Prashant’s parents claimed that even after his death, the loan app representatives did not stop harassing them and for the past three days they kept making calls and sending obscene messages.

In another incident, Tarun Reddy who was studying middleman and resident of Antaragam village of rural Jagtial mandal lost Rs 1.8 lakh while playing online games. Since Sunday, loan application representatives have started phoning him.

Fearing his father would beat him if he found out he was losing a huge amount of money playing online games, Tarun Reddy went out into the fields on Monday morning and attempted to kill himself after consuming pesticides.

His parents, who found Tarun Reddy in an unconscious state, immediately transferred him to a nearby hospital. But when his health deteriorated, he was transferred to Karimnagar for better treatment. Tarun Reddy breathed his last on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Karimnagar Government Hospital.
